Raphaλl Panzani was born on August 7, 1921 in Marseille, France. He received his MD degree at the age of 25. He became interested in allergy at the beginning of his long career, and remained passionate about it throughout it until he breathed last. He had received a Fulbright scholarship award in 1966 in recognition for his distinguished work on asthma and allergy. Raphaλl pursued his research investigations in close collaboration with many of his colleagues across Europe and other parts of the world, until the very end of his life with great devotion and boundless enthusiasm. I had the opportunity to work on collaborative projects cross-reactive pollen allergens from geographically distant continents of Europe and India. He has been on Editorial Board of Indian Journal of Aerobiology and Indian Journal of allergy and Immunology.
Raphaλl was fond of nature, an aficionado of Roman culture and an expert in history and literature. He identified with Shakespeare and Dante and embraced the philosophy of Seneca. Raphaλl was a great sportsman and an exemplary family man. For all of us who knew him, particularly those of us who were privileged to have visited him at his elegant house in Marseille and his beloved farm in Aix-en-Provence, we will miss him immensely and will always remember him as a friend, guide, philosopher and as role model to Allergologists across the world. I have known him as an amiable, humble and loving person and I consider a personal loss in his demise on May 10, 2014. I am sure his work and dedication will keep the medical community inspiring for a long time to come.
